After permanent teeth erupt during childhood, the gum tissue should slowly recede to expose the whole tooth. In some instances however, the gums do not recede properly and remain covering a large portion of the teeth, causing the appearance of short teeth and a gummy smile. This phenomenon is called altered passive eruption and may result in pocketing between the tooth and gum, which may trap bacteria and lead to bone loss. This problem is easily remedied by gently reshaping the gum and bone around the teeth, and often has a dramatic effect on the appearance of one’s smile. Although the procedure might initially sound invasive and painful, recovery is typically very fast with minimal discomfort. We have yet to have a patient be anything other than elated with the results and almost immediate recovery! The results of this gummy smile treatment can reveal beautiful teeth and dramatically improve one’s smile. If you have a gummy smile, don’t delay!
